PODCAST: ScrappyGull 004: Simple Rules For Guests

After doing some client work this past week, I bring up some simple rules for recording and editing guests on your podcast.

  • Get the guest close to the mic.

  • I avoid plosive sounds and a hard attack on the microphone by putting my cheek parallel to the windscreen, so that I’m speaking across the mic, not directly into it.

  • If your mic is on a table, ask guests to refrain from banging the table. Also, use coasters if you have drinks in the studio.

  • Pet Sounds is a great album, but not a great thing to have to edit out of your audio. Move pets away if possible.

  • Edit out crutch words like Um, Er, Ah, if you can do it without interrupting the flow of speech.

  • Tighten up pauses.

  • Rule of Thumb: Edit out stuttered sentences if you can do it and not erase context. You should strive to make sure guest and host don’t sound like idiots.
